Passing on unwanted clothes to charity every so often

Wardrobes fill up quietly. A jumper that no longer fits, shoes that pinch and a coat from years ago all stay simply because nobody decides to move them. Over time, the space for the clothes you actually wear shrinks. Getting dressed becomes a struggle through crowded rails and shelves. Passing things on regularly keeps the cupboard manageable.

The easiest method is to keep a bag or box in the bottom of the wardrobe. Whenever you try something on and decide it is not for you, it goes straight in. There is no need to wait for a big sorting day. When the bag is full, it is taken away and replaced with an empty one. This turns a big chore into a small habit.

What is worth passing on

Clothes in good condition can be given to a charity shop, a school collection or a friend. Items that are stained, torn or worn through are better sent to textile recycling. Check pockets before you close the bag, because they often hold surprises. Wash what needs washing first, so that the next owner receives clean things. A little care makes the gift more valuable.

A useful rule is to ask whether you have worn the item in the past year. If not, it is probably not part of your life any more. Clothes bought for a special occasion that never returned can go too. Duplicates, such as several very similar black jumpers, deserve a closer look. Keep the best and let the rest go.

Children's clothes need a more frequent glance, as they grow out of things so quickly. Put what no longer fits into a separate bag every few months. Other families are often glad to receive it, or it can be saved for a younger sibling. Shoes should be checked in the same way. This keeps the children's drawers light and easy to use.

A wardrobe kept in this way is a pleasure to open. Everything you see is something you wear, and mornings become simpler. The bag by the door reminds you to keep going. It also brings a quiet satisfaction, since your things now help somebody else. Regular sorting keeps a wardrobe calm and useful.
